Wouldn’t be willing to do this without this kit… Pretty good!

TLDR: Super happy with this kit.

    Here’s the cable I made: http://imgur.com/a/GZ9l3

I made a couple mistakes making the USB cable initially… i’ll tell you what you might want to watch out for.

First, I had issues with my paracord… mostly because of my stupidity and inexperience. The thought entered my mind when pulling the insides out of the paracord, maybe I should pull both sides out so they are loose, instead of just doing one side and hoping the other would come free- it didn’t. I pulled the paracord sleeve inside itself about 3 inches worth. Thankfully the sleeve is a bit long when you get your kit… but I still had to cut a couple inches off my USB cable.

Second, I never thought to stretch out the heat shrink. The kit shipped with two heat shrink tubes, but they would only really fit easily over the micro-usb side, and couldn’t stretch over the USB male side. Since bulking up my cable though, I have discovered it’s really easy to stretch it out a bit! That would have kept me from going out to Ace Hardware to buy more (and more colors :D) … but in the end I am thankful for the learning experience, and i’ve been stretching all my bulking heat shrink to get it all on there without tearing. So stretch your heat-shrink if you have to, a pair of screwdrivers nimbly pulled apart to stretch it works well.

Keep in mind if you are ordering the micro-usb variant… that the micro-usb housing is not a 1-piece like the USB type A or mini-usb housing in the tutorial video. When wrapped around both paracord and techflex sleeving, the metal part bulked out quite a bit, making closing the housing and keeping it closed a bit difficult. To solve this, I just wrapped electrical tape really tight around it a couple times and heat shrunk it closed. It feels so nice now.

The last issue I had was not being able to transfer data or use the cable for anything other than charging. It looked like one of the micro-usb pins inside the connector was slightly offset, so I just used a little 26 gauge titanium wire (from my vape building gear) to ease it back straight. Now charging AND data-transfer / regular USB stuff works flawlessly… I can’t really fault the kit so much for this I guess.

Overall, the kit is well priced… so many options… building it was fun… but next time I might opt for not having tech-flex. I didn’t know it would be so rigid with it, but I am starting to like it… so _maybe_. More tech-flex color options would be nice, the option to buy extra bulking-heat-shrink during ordering would be cool too 🙂

    Thanks Pete!!!

    Thanks for the kit!

Whole experience was pretty fun, here’s a tip for anyone without a heat gun / hair dryer, I tried using a hair dryer but it wasn’t shrinking enough, presumably from insufficient heat, dangling the heat shrink area over a gas stove did the trick just fine (at a relatively safe distance, about 25 cm away from the fire, while keeping the fire low / small).
